Introduction
When summer temperatures climb in southern New Mexico, it can feel like you’re living inside a convection oven. That’s why so many people head for the mountains every weekend.
Every summer, you’ll notice license plates from Texas, Arizona, Colorado, and beyond. Travelers know that just a short drive into the mountains brings cooler temperatures, beautiful scenery, and a chance to slow down. Silver City and the Gila National Forest have become one of my favorite places to escape the heat, and after your first visit, I think they might become one of yours too.
Why Visit
One of the first things I noticed when I visited Silver City was its calm, friendly and relaxing atmosphere with an artsy vibe. What I continue to love about Silver City is its laid-back atmosphere. The historic downtown is full of galleries, local shops, and friendly people. It feels like a place where visitors are encouraged to slow down and enjoy themselves rather than rush from one attraction to another.
Getting There:
Option 1
Take Interstate 25 south for 140 miles to Hatch, New Mexico – Pick up some world-famous Hatch green or red chiles or Ristras while you are there.
Option 2
For one of the most scenic drives in New Mexico, leave I-25 at NM-152 through Hillsboro. Hillsboro is a small town with only a few places to stop, so I recommend bringing drinks and snacks just in case the café or store is closed. There are a few rest areas through the Gila National Forest – and over Emory Pass. Keep an eye out for the signs.
Also, this is a scenic route with many turns, please do not try to take your large RV through this area before you have driven it in a regular passenger car or truck. I would also suggest making my first trip during daylight hours so you can see all of the views.
Whichever route you choose, getting there is part of the experience.
The Drive is Part of the Adventure
The drive through NM-152 and the Gila National Forest is one of the highlights of the trip. The winding roads reveal new scenery around every turn, and the landscape changes beautifully with each season. Emory Pass is a high elevation point in the Gila National Forest that offers panoramic views and usually has a nice breeze to cool off from the summer heat. There are restrooms available.
Also, a nice stopping area is the Gallinas Upper where restrooms are available. Hiking areas are located at both the Upper and Lower Gallinas areas.
My Favorite Things to Do in and around Silver City
Whether you’re looking for scenic drives, outdoor adventures, unique shopping, or great local restaurants, Silver City has something for everyone. Here are some of my favorite ways to spend time in and around the area.
Scenic Drives
One of the best ways to experience the Gila National Forest is simply to drive through it. Every trip is different. You may spot deer grazing near the road, javelinas crossing the highway, or even a black bear wandering through the forest. At approximately 5,900 feet in elevation, the forest provides a refreshing escape from the summer heat.
One of my favorite stops along the way is the Hillsboro Trading Post. If it’s open, stop in and say hello to Mary. Her shop is filled with snacks, handmade New Mexico gifts, and local treasures, many of which she creates herself.
Hiking
The Catwalk Recreation Area near Glenwood is one of my favorite hikes in southwest New Mexico. The trail follows Whitewater Canyon across metal walkways attached to the canyon walls, making it both beautiful and unique. If you’re spending several days in the area, you’ll also find nearby hot springs and excellent stargazing opportunities.
Lakes
If you enjoy fishing or simply spending time on the water, Lake Roberts and Bill Evans Lake are both worth visiting. They’re peaceful places to relax, enjoy the scenery, and spend a quiet afternoon outdoors.

Shopping
Downtown Silver City is one of my favorite places to browse. You’ll find art galleries, locally made jewelry, antique shops, unique gifts and stores like Zir Yab’s Body Brew featuring handcrafted natural body care products. You may want to plan a time just to visit the Silver City Trading Company Antiques Mall located at 205 W. Broadway. This is an impressive space that features over 300 dealers and consignors.
Silver City Restaurants
Buckhorn Saloon & Opera House
One of the oldest operating saloons in the American Southwest. Not only does it have a historic atmosphere, the food is excellent. Reservations are recommended because it’s a favorite with both locals and visitors.
The Jalisco Café
For authentic Mexican cuisine.
Little Toad Creek Brewery
Great food, this local brewery has fun events like karaoke night and Singo. Check out the events calendar online.
Mick’s 33 Lounge
A speakeasy vibe with a quiet atmosphere
Whiskey Creek Zocalo
Delicious pizza – live music – brewery.
Wildlife Encounters
I enjoyed driving through the mountains in the early mornings or right before dusk. You just never know what wildlife you will come across. I have spotted javelinas near Hillsboro, as well as deer and even black bears while driving through the Gila National Forest near Pinos Altos. Birdwatchers will also find plenty of birds to enjoy.
One evening, just before dusk, I was driving through the forest when a black bear casually wandered across the road in front of me. I was so excited that I grabbed my camera…and completely missed the shot! The bear took its time, disappeared into the trees, and all I could do was laugh at myself. I never got the picture, but I’ll never forget the experience.

Planning Your Trip
What to pack when taking a trip to Silver City, NM – Sunscreen, hat, walking shoes and comfortable clothes. Even the nicer restaurants have a relaxed feel.
Silver City is beautiful year-round and each season offers something a little different.
Spring: You may still see patches of snow at the higher elevations, while trees and wildflowers begin adding color to the landscape.
Summer: Cooler mountain temperatures make Silver City and the Gila National Forest a perfect escape from the desert heat.
Fall: The changing leaves create beautiful scenery throughout the mountains.
Winter: Snow is possible, especially in the higher elevations. If you’re traveling through the Gila National Forest, check road conditions before your trip, as some roads may not be cleared after a snowfall. When the weather looks questionable or I’m getting a late start, I usually choose the route through Hatch, New Mexico. It’s the option that gives me the most peace of mind.

The people are nice; park is kept clean and quiet. The park offers spacious sites. Also has casitas.
Continental Divide RV Park
Also has primitive cabins. The deer will come right up to your RV.
There is also a KOA and other RV parks in Silver City, NM and the surrounding towns.
